What is the Skilled Worker Visa?

If you are looking to work in the UK, the Skilled Worker visa is the main route available to overseas nationals. However, recent changes mean the requirements are stricter than before, so it is important to understand exactly what is needed before applying.

The Skilled Worker visa allows you to live and work in the UK for an employer approved by the Home Office. To qualify, you must have a job offer from a licensed UK sponsor, a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS), an eligible job, you must meet the salary requirements and prove your English language ability.

What Are the Salary Requirements in 2026?

The general salary threshold is around £41,700 per year. You must meet either this threshold or the ‘going rate’ for your job, whichever is higher. Some applicants, such as those extending their skilled worker visa may benefit from lower thresholds.

Do You Need Sponsorship?

Yes. This is a sponsored visa. Your employer must hold a valid sponsor license and assign you a Certificate of Sponsorship. Without sponsorship, you cannot apply.

What Jobs Are Eligible?

Jobs must be on the eligible occupations list. The Home Office classifies eligible occupations into higher skilled and medium-skilled tiers. The higher skilled jobs are equivalent to graduate skill level; the mid-level skilled occupations are equivalent to RQF 3-5. You can only be eligible for a medium skilled role if it is listed on the Immigration Salary List or the Temporary Shortage list.  The skill level of the occupation can also determine your salary thresholds and rights to have your dependents join you in the UK. You can check the skill level by checking the 4-digit code for the specific role; this can be found on the CASCOT occupation coding tool.

How to Apply for a Skilled Worker Visa

  1. Secure a job offer from a UK sponsor
    2. Receive your Certificate of Sponsorship
    3. Submit an online application
    4. Provide supporting documents such as passport, English test results, and financial evidence
Applications can be made up to 3 months before your job start date.

Can You Settle in the UK?

The Skilled Worker visa can lead to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after 5 years, subject to meeting the relevant requirements.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Common issues include incorrect salary calculations, wrong occupation codes, and sponsorship or compliance problems.

The Skilled Worker visa remains the main pathway to working in the UK, but the rules are increasingly complex. Seeking legal advice early can help avoid delays and refusals.
