Mis-diagnosed fractures and A&E Departments – Can I claim compensation?

by Ridley & Hall in Daxa Patel, Medical Negligence posted June 19, 2018.

It is not unusual for the injury to be not so obvious, when a patient first attends either his GP or the A&E Department, following an injury, but if a Doctor misses a scaphoid fracture, or if the view taken on the x-ray was incorrect, it results in a fracture misdiagnosis, which can lead to serious complications and possibly a life-long disability.

Where a fracture is misdiagnosed and the patient is discharged home without advice and an accurate diagnosis of the injury, by the time the patient comes back to the hospital for further treatment, the delay in diagnosing the fracture can lead to serious consequences.

Not all missed fractures give rise to a clinical negligence claim, however, one fracture that can cause particular problems, if not diagnosed quickly, is a fracture of the scaphoid, which is a small bone in the wrist.  This can happen as a result of a fall, when somebody tries to break their fall with their hand and the impact of the fall is then on the hand and the wrist.  If the scaphoid fracture is not identified promptly and not treated promptly, all sorts of long term issues can occur, such as osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis, as well as arthritis and a reduced grip.

If you or a member of your family or a loved one has suffered as a result of a misdiagnosis, then please contact us.
