When tweeting a client doesn’t involve social media

Meet our new member of staff – Ivan The Parrot  Ivan Newsletter2

At Ridley & Hall we like to go the extra mile for our clients. If it’s within our power to help, then we will always try to do so.

In fact, one of our team hatched a plan recently to help a client who was struggling to communicate.

Laura Milburn works in our care proceedings and adoptions team. She is experienced in using her advocacy and negotiation skills on behalf of her clients.

In a recent care proceedings case, Laura was visiting a mother who was experiencing some anxiety and communication problems.

Known for being down to earth and practical, Laura spoke to the wider family to try and understand how they could best get around the obstacle of the communication barrier.

The client’s family happened to mention she has a passion for animals. Little did they know that Laura also is an animal lover, with her very own pampered pet – Ivan the Parrot.

Ivan, who is only a year old, is a bit of a character. He loves the water – so visitors to Laura’s house need to beware in case he tries to jump in the bath or shower with them! He’s a very sociable fellow and this feathered friend likes to travel and accompany Laura on weekends away – even more so if his favourite food (bananas) are involved.

Thinking outside of the box/aviary, Laura offered to bring Ivan along next time she met the family. So, Ivan the parrot was duly packed into his travel cage ready for the three-hour round trip to meet the mum.

Despite some hairy (or should that be feathered) moments – namely when the client’s dog thought Ivan might make a tasty snack – the meeting was a big success. The client held and stroked Ivan, and being in her own home around her own animals made her feel noticeably less anxious. Having Ivan the Ice Breaker on hand meant mum could focus and engage and that ultimately means she has the best possible access to justice.

So, no matter what the situation may be, here at Ridley & Hall we really will consider any accommodations to make what we understand is a very stressful time more manageable for families.

Perhaps Ivan may need to come on the payroll – we’re just hoping his bill can be covered by bananas.
